Old Tomb, Washington's Tomb, Slave Memorial

George Washington died in the master bedroom at Mount Vernon on December 14, 1799. In his will, he directed that he be buried on his beloved Mount Vernon estate. He also selected a site for a new brick tomb to replace the original family vault, which was deteriorating.

Forest Trail

This quarter-mile trail leads through woods of Oak, Holly, and Laurel trees, past Washington’s cobble quarry, a Native American site, and over a bridge spanning a steep ravine.

Gardens
November 1 - December 31, 2008
The Upper Garden contains a wide variety of flowers and trees, including boxwood planted in Washington's day, and vegetable beds. The beds have been restored to their originial size, based on careful archaeological excavations, and two boxwood parterres have been re-created with the French fleur-de-lis design that Washington admired.
