The National Treasure Tour at Mount Vernon
April 5 - November 30, 2008
Tours are offered at: 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Due to the popularity of Mount Vernon’s special “Basement Tours” in January and February, the Estate has created an entire “National Treasure Tour” where visitors can take an hour-long walking tour that includes behind-the-scenes information about areas where “National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets” filming took place and how these locations were used during George Washington’s time.

Colonial Days at Mount Vernon

Mount Vernon Kicks Off Scouting Days with Special Activities on Nov. 1st

On Saturday, November 1, Mount Vernon kicks off the Scouting Days program with special activities for scouts from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Scouts can participate in activities designed to help earn merit badges focusing on surveying, archaeology, woodworking, animal husbandry, and cooking.

Old Tomb, Washington's Tomb, Slave Memorial

George Washington died in the master bedroom at Mount Vernon on December 14, 1799. In his will, he directed that he be buried on his beloved Mount Vernon estate. He also selected a site for a new brick tomb to replace the original family vault, which was deteriorating.

This quarter-mile trail leads through woods of Oak, Holly, and Laurel trees, past Washington’s cobble quarry, a Native American site, and over a bridge spanning a steep ravine.

Gardens

The Upper Garden contains a wide variety of flowers and trees, including boxwood planted in Washington's day, and vegetable beds. The beds have been restored to their originial size, based on careful archaeological excavations, and two boxwood parterres have been re-created with the French fleur-de-lis design that Washington admired.
